SurveyMonkey Alternatives: 3 Survey Tools Compared
Compare Google Forms, Typeform and Qualtrics as SurveyMonkey alternatives. Check plan costs, routing and exports before moving a recurring customer survey.

Google Forms, Typeform and Qualtrics are SurveyMonkey alternatives for different survey jobs. Compare simple collection, a tailored form experience and a broader research program. Choose by the problem you need to fix, then test routing, answer states and exports on the plan you would actually buy before moving the survey history.
What are you paying to replace?
SurveyMonkey creates questionnaires, collects answers and lets teams analyze the results. A move may make sense because of price, respondent experience or a requirement in the questionnaire. Write down which one is driving the change before copying a year's worth of surveys.
SurveyMonkey's individual pricing page lists Basic as free with 10 questions per survey and a limited number of viewable responses. Standard Monthly is $149 a month with 1,000 responses per month. Advantage Annual is $39 a month, billed as $468 annually, with 15,000 responses per year. These are different commitments and response periods; SurveyMonkey Audience responses are sold separately.
Check the current SurveyMonkey pricing page against the collaborators, responses, logic and exports your team needs. A lower headline fee is useful only if the replacement can run the whole questionnaire and return the records you use.
Tool | Best-fit job and consequential limit |
|---|---|
Concrete advantage / best-fit job: Collect from an audience you already reach and work with raw responses in Google Sheets Limitation that changes the choice: Bring your own audience; section-routing and question-flow limits may not support the instrument | |
Concrete advantage / best-fit job: A tailored respondent-facing form with conditional flow Limitation that changes the choice: Response, user, branding and logic entitlements depend on the selected plan; confirm exports and do not assume purchased respondents | |
Concrete advantage / best-fit job: More extensive survey logic and paid guided research methods for a recurring research workflow Limitation that changes the choice: Free-account limits and paid-method access differ; recruit and quality-check the sample separately |
Example: moving a monthly delivery survey
This hypothetical subscription brand has 300 named customers and wants to move a short monthly delivery survey. The questionnaire and records below show what must survive. Test every route on the plan the team intends to buy.
Treat the table as a shortlist for the actual pulse. Google Forms is a reasonable first candidate because the brand already has its audience. A different form experience or broader research workflow merits the move when it solves the problem that prompted the migration.
- Are you a current subscriber? If no, exit before the delivery question.
- Did the last delivery arrive as expected? Eligible subscribers can answer Yes, No or Cannot judge.
- Keep Cannot judge distinct from a neutral rating. Keep an unanswered eligible question as missing in the export.
That small instrument contains the important traps. Someone outside the audience must leave before the delivery question. A customer who cannot judge the delivery has given a meaningful answer. A customer who never answers has not given the same answer.
In Google Forms, answer-based section routing works with multiple-choice and dropdown questions; build the screener to fit that documented mechanism. Complete the survey on the intended device, then check the export. A branch that looks right in the editor can still leave the analyst with an unusable base.
The free-plan calculation
The Qualtrics free-account terms list one user, three active surveys, 30 questions per survey and 500 total responses. Total matters here: this is not a monthly allowance. Retaken and deleted responses count, and the free account does not send email invitations. The documented logic includes skip, display and branch logic, with CSV, TSV, Excel, XML and SPSS exports. If all 300 customers submit one recorded response, one wave uses 300 of the 500 responses, leaving 200 before tests or retakes; two full waves would require 600. Confirm the selected account's terms before relying on that allowance.
Typeform's free route has a bounded monthly response allowance. Response, user, branding and logic entitlements vary with the selected plan, so price the configuration the brand would keep. Its separate Research Flow offers panel access; SurveyMonkey LaunchPad separately prices targeted responses. Recruitment is a separate item from ordinary collection.
If the team specifically needs open-source software or self-hosting, add that requirement to the shortlist. Free access says nothing about either. Decide who will host and support the system, then put it through the same pulse test.
The export is where the switch proves itself
Run an eligible answer, an ineligible answer and Cannot judge. Test an eligible person submitting without an optional answer, then a person quitting before submission. Ask whether that second case appears as a partial record on the chosen plan. The two omissions mean different things. The exclusivity check below applies to a longer questionnaire that offers a None option; it does not add that option to this delivery pulse.
Migration check | Pilot example and passing condition |
|---|---|
Eligibility | Example to run on the copied instrument: Submit an ineligible answer Passing condition: No delivery-answer record enters the eligible base |
Exclusive option | Example to run on the copied instrument: Select None with another answer where prohibited Passing condition: The response rule is enforced or the conflict is visibly flagged |
Unanswerability | Example to run on the copied instrument: Submit Cannot judge Passing condition: It remains a distinct code, not a middle rating |
Partial response | Example to run on the copied instrument: Stop after one optional item Passing condition: Missing is distinguishable from a negative or skipped route |
Result reproduction | Example to run on the copied instrument: Calculate one count and base from export Passing condition: It agrees with the declared measure and dashboard definition |
Have the analyst reproduce a count and its qualifying-answer total from the export. Save the passing records and mapping with the first new wave. Labels can differ if the meanings remain. Missing must not become a negative answer or skipped route.
Keep the first migration on the same wording, order and requirements where practical. A redesign may be worth doing, but it can also change answers. Run an appropriate old-versus-new bridge before interpreting a jump between waves as a change in delivery experience.
For this brand, start with one copied pulse. If Google Forms passes, the move may be small. If the required experience calls for Typeform, test that version. If recurring research needs justify Qualtrics, include the whole workflow and its costs. There is no prize for moving to a larger platform than the job requires.
A customer survey still needs customer answers
For answers from the brand's named subscribers, keep a sound contact and collection process. Sapien can help compare simulated reactions to a new offer or message; that is a different research question from transferring a customer-pulse history. Our synthetic and human respondents guide explains the choice of evidence source.
If the next question concerns an offer rather than the old survey platform, discuss that comparison. Otherwise, finish the pulse pilot first. The replacement is ready when the team can recover the same answers and understand what each missing answer means.
